In sunny southern California, the Colorado and Mojave deserts merge to form the stunning Joshua Tree National Park. Many people know this area as a training ground for local Marines, but we can’t let them hog all the fun! Joshua Tree is one of the best spots for adventure photography sessions and elopements.

Kristin + George’s Joshua Tree Anniversary Photography Session

I recently had the privilege of photographing Kristin and George for their anniversary session. The natural beauty of the park along with this sweet, easy-going couple allowed me to capture every loving moment between the two of them. Biodiverse Joshua Tree features a vast number of plants, animals, and terrains, making it the ideal location for photoshoots, elopements, and enchanting getaways at one of their top Airbnb’s. 

First Thing’s First | Joshua Tree Photoshoot Permits

When planning a photoshoot or event at Joshua Tree, it is important to get the correct permits before entering the park. According to the national park website, you must fill out a NPS Form 10-930 Short Form and pay the $120 processing fee to receive a permit for photoshoots and weddings.

Please do not forget to apply for a permit, as the cost for not having one is $500! Once you have your permit, you are only allowed to have your photoshoot or wedding at one of the several locations listed here, and I have included some of my permit-approved favorites below!

Top Joshua Tree Photography Locations

Hidden Valley

Hidden Valley is one of the most gorgeous spots in Joshua Tree due to the huge boulders. This rare view provides a magical backdrop for all your photos (and they’re fun to climb!). 

Cap Rock

This spot is massive! Seriously, I have to pull out my wide lens when photographing at Cap Rock. Take in the unique views of the giant monzogranite rocks and green juniper trees. They will be the perfect location for your photoshoot or adventurous elopement!

Rattlesnake Canyon

Don’t worry, I’ve yet to see a snake here (but I would watch your step!). Rattlesnake Canyon has a little bit of everything – trees, cacti, and impressive rock formations. This area is a crowd favorite when it comes to weddings and photoshoots for a reason! Unfortunately, it’s temporarily closed due to vandalism. 🙁
