When Kayla and Dalton contacted me about their Colorado elopement, I couldn’t wait to begin scouting out ceremony locations for them. They wanted a true elopement – just the two of them and the breathtaking mountainside for the ceremony. After some hiking and research, I stumbled upon Guanella Pass, Colorado near Mount Bierstadt. This unique pass straddles a steep divide, so it has some diverse scenery. When I came upon this small lake, I knew the lighting would be stunning for photographs. Plus, a thick forest surrounds the lake so that we could get those romantic woodsy shots.
The breeze was chilly, but Kayla and Dalton were so wrapped up in the moment they didn’t seem to mind. Kayla even came prepared with a beautiful shawl to wrap up in, which looked great in photos, too! I love when couples bring along fun accessories like hiking boots, hats, or wraps like Kayla’s. It adds some personality and flair (and functionality, of course).
One of the many cool things about Colorado is that you can exchange rings without an officiant. Kayla and Dalton were able to marry themselves – no witness needed! For couples wanting a more romantic or adventurous ceremony, Colorado makes it possible to get married off the beaten path – or almost anywhere you please.
I love that Kayla and Dalton wanted their day to be simple and private. I couldn’t help but tear up at their heartfelt, unrestrained vows. They were free to take their time and tell each other exactly what they wanted without worrying about an audience or a tight schedule.
After their lakeside ring exchange, we headed into the trees for a few non-windswept shots. The moment felt so peaceful and sacred. Then, when they were ready, we met a few of their friends back at their cabin to sign the marriage license. Even an elopement wouldn’t be complete without wedding cake cutting and some photos with friends!
Cheers, my friends! Wishing you a lifetime of love and adventure.
