Love was definitely in the air on June 5, 2021 when Jackie and Nico exchanged their vows before their closest friends and family members. The bride and groom had a gorgeous, classic-yet-modern ceremony at the Heinz Chapel Pittsburgh, followed by an elegant reception at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Pittsburgh. Both historic venues are in Oakland, which is the academic area of Pittsburgh.

We were also able to take some stunning portraits of the couple and their wedding party in Oakland. The buildings, beautiful trees, and striking red doors created the perfect backdrops for the couple’s portion of their wedding day photo shoot. Jackie and Nico both attended the University of Pittsburgh, so it just made sense to take their photos in the area. It definitely went with the theme of the day!

The Bride and Groom’s Love Story

Jackie and Nico originally met in class at the University of Pittsburgh. Jackie always showed up late to class and snuck in the back to sit in the only empty seat near her friends. Ironically, the seat was also right next to Nico. Their relationship began as a friendship that grew during their time at college. They didn’t even go on their first date until after finals their senior year! But they’ve been inseparable ever since. The happy couple got engaged in beautiful Iceland, and their story took off from there! They recently purchased a home just north of Pittsburgh, and now have two Australian Shepherd puppies named Paul and Artie. I’d say they’re off to a great start!

Stop & Smell the Roses

I have a particular fondness for outdoor photos. You can take advantage of the natural greenery and beauty, plus the lighting is typically better than indoors. I often tell couples that if the weather is nice, we can almost always find several stunning backdrops in front of ponds or fountains, pretty landscaping, and other natural features around the area. Jackie and Nico picked neutral colors for their wedding, so choosing to take their photos in front of the gorgeous, green trees really made the photographs pop!

Take Advantage of Architectural Beauty

Many couples also take advantage of their venues! The Heinz Memorial Chapel has these incredible, massive red doors that give the perfect pop of color to wedding portraits. We were able to get some great shots of Jackie and Nico in front of the iconic doors and other areas outside the chapel. I love when a location provides tons of variety! We didn’t even have to walk far to get this diverse collection of portraits.
